💡 What Is Depth of Discount?
Depth of Discount is the difference between a product’s regular price and its promoted price. For example, if an item is regularly priced at $10 and is promoted at $7, the depth of discount is $3.
This value helps answer questions like:
How deeply was this item discounted?
Which retailer offered the biggest price cuts?
Are discounting strategies different across categories?
Where and How You Can Access or Create It
The way you work with Depth of Discount depends on the dataset and your client type.
For PEP Clients (U.S. Consumables)
The Depth of Discount is already available as a built-in field on the platform. It is calculated as Regular Price minus Net Unit Price, and is expressed in dollars.
Use the following steps for Depth of Discount:
Step 1: Go to Dynamic Summary.
Step 2: Click on Fields. In the top-right corner of the Dynamic Summary table, click the Fields button to open the field selector window.
Step 3: Select Depth of Discount under Price/Numeric Field
Expand the Price/Numeric section in the left-hand panel.
Scroll to or search for Depth of Discount and select it.
Apply any filters based on your reporting needs.
Click Apply to add the field to your table.
Need help editing fields? See How to Edit Fields in Dynamic Summary.
Step 4: Choose Your Aggregation Function
You can use the dropdown menu to the right of the Depth of Discount field to select the aggregation function you want to use.
In most cases, Average is the appropriate selection, as it reflects the typical discount applied across items. However, you can also use this menu to view values like the Minimum or Maximum Depth of Discount, depending on your analysis needs.
Note: If either Regular Price or Net Unit Price is missing for a promotion, Depth of Discount will not be calculated for that promotion.
For Durables Clients (General Merchandise)
Durables datasets may not include consistent pricing fields like Regular Price and Sale Price. Instead, you should use existing fields that represent a discount amount directly:
Dollar Off
Percent Off
These fields typically reflect the advertised savings and are often more reliable for summarizing discounting behavior.
NOTE: These values are typically available when the ad explicitly states the discount amount. If not listed, they may appear blank.
For Canada Clients
For Canadian database, the Depth of Discount can be created using a custom calculated value:
Depth of Discount = Regular Price High – Unit Price Sale
You can create this by adding a Calculated Value in the Dynamic Summary as shown below:
Step 1: Select the Fields menu from the top-right corner. In the Fields menu, either select Add Calculated Value at the top or the calculated icon in the Values section.
Step 2: Enter a name that will be the Depth of Discount for the calculated value. Next, select "Reg Price - High" and "Unit Price - Sale" from the All Fields menu for the formula. Drag fields into the text box at the bottom of the window, and join fields with the " - " subtraction operator to get the difference. You are composing the formula that will be used to calculate the Depth of Discount value. Finally, click Apply to add this calculated value to your report.
Note: This method relies on both values being available for the item. If one is missing, the result will be blank or inaccurate.
