Numerator tracks and enters different Media Types for all ads. Read below regarding the specific nuances for Media Types for General Merchandise clients.

Note: This article discusses nuances specifically for General Merchandise client databases. To check which database you are in, follow THESE STEPS.

  • Email are ads sent directly to consumer’s email inboxes with a promotional message for certain categories and/or items, such as “semi-annual sale” or “all X items are 50% this weekend.” These are the most-seen version of the email copy, not personalized messages sent to a segment of their customers.

  • In-store are ads available at the store location(s), typically located at the front of the store. In-store ads could be the main weekly flyer, monthly booklets, or could be store-exclusive ads. Also, they are typically not distributed in a newspaper or in the mail. Please note, Numerator does not guarantee collection of in-store-only ads.

  • Insert-Digital are the online/digital version of the advertising supplement made available via a retailer’s website. These can include retailer ads published online only or in addition to the Insert/Flyer.

  • Insert-Paper are ads not online or in-store, typically available in hard copy format for consumers.

  • Mailers are ads received via the Postal Service, or home delivered.

  • Run of Press (ROP) are ads that appear in local and national newspapers printed directly as part of the newspaper itself, not an inserted copy of the circular.

    • In some cases, ROP ads are what many people would consider to be insert/circular based on a visual review of the ad without seeing its placement in the newspaper. These may be printed in color, contain multiple sequential pages entirely devoted to ads placed by a single advertiser, and otherwise resemble an insert. However, if they are the same size as the newspaper itself, printed as part of the newspaper, and contain a dateline they may be classified as ROP.

  • Website are ads published online on a retailer's website and not published as a standard insert/circular or mailer.
