Understanding Product Line Ads

We’re improving how Product Line Ads work so you have better control over what appears in your results. This update makes it easier to separate very broad, generic promotions from brand-specific promotions.

What Is a Product Line Ad?

A Product Line Ad is a promotion that does not list a specific product (SKU), but instead applies to a group of products.

For example:

  • “Save $3 when you buy 2 participating Unilever products.”

These ads:

  • Don’t name one exact product

  • Refer broadly to “products” or “items”

  • Apply across multiple products

What’s Changing?

Previously, Product Line Ads were treated more generally. Now, we are separating them into three clearer categories so you can decide how broad you want your results to be.

1️⃣ Brand-Specific Ads (Most Specific)

  • These promotions apply to a specific brand.

  • Included by default

    • Why? This most closely matches how Product Line Ads have traditionally been used.

Example: “Any 3: Axe, Dove, Dove Men+Care, Degree, Schmidt's, Shea Moisture, Nexxus, Tresemme, Vaseline or Simple”

  • This is focused and brand-defined.

2️⃣ Manufacturer-Specific Ads (More Broad)

  • These promotions apply across an entire manufacturer’s portfolio, have an "undefined Manufacturer, " and have the words "products" or "items" in the product description.

  • Excluded by default

    • Why? Many users told us these feel too broad and can inflate results.

Example: “Get $7 in rewards, on select Valentine's Day, grocery and household items.”

  • This represents a generic manufacturer and has "items" in the product description.

3️⃣ Private Label Ads (Retailer Brands)

  • These are generic promotions that apply to store-owned brands with the words "products" or "items" in the product description.

  • Excluded by default

    • Why? These are often very general and not always relevant, depending on your analysis.

Example: “Giant Eagle or Market District Holiday Items”

  • This ad block has private label brands with the word "items" in the product description.

What Is the New Default?

By default, your results will now:

  • ✅ Include Brand-specific ads

  • ❌ Exclude Manufacturer ads

  • ❌ Exclude Private Label ads

This keeps your results more focused and aligned with how most users analyze promotions.

Why This Update Is Helpful

This change helps you:

  • Avoid overly generic ad blocks

  • Get more precise results

  • Better control how broad your promotion search is

  • Align results with common client preferences
